# How to write (finance version)

You may have seen on social media the David Ogilvy memo from 1982 about "How To Write" . I've taken the liberty of translating it for a 2025 finance professionals.

*The better you write, the higher you'll go in finance.*

*People who think clearly, write clearly.*

*Good writing isn't a natural gift. You have to learn to write well.*

*Here are 10 tips:*

1. *Read* [*Smart Brevity: The Power of Saying More with Less*](https://www.axios.com/smart-brevity?ref=plainfinance.net)*. Read it twice.*
2. *Write the way you talk. Naturally.*
3. *Use short words, short sentences and short paragraphs.*
4. *Never use jargon like synergise, operationalise, strategise, or impactful. They're hallmarks of someone trying too hard.*
5. *Never write more than two pages on any subject. If you can't explain it in two pages, you don't understand it.*
6. *Check your numbers. Always.*
7. *Never send a report or email the day you write it. Read it aloud the next morning, then edit it.*
8. *If it's important, get a colleague (not an AI chatbot!) to improve it.*
9. *Before you send anything, make sure it's crystal clear what you want the recipient to do.*
10. *If you want action from someone, don't write. Go and talk to them.*
